A personal example of this was Tracey and her intolerance with dairy products. When I met Tracey she was addicted to cheese. She was a serious cheesaholic! She used to get sick at least five times a year where she would be in bed for a week with whatever flu, bug, virus, cold or cough was going around at the time. She also had regular diarrhea and constipation and was manic and skittery every morning. On observing her, six things really stood out about her diet, lifestyle and daily habits:
- She slept in as late as she could
- She did not have a morning routine or rhythm
- She drank coffee with sugar first thing in the morning
- She did not sit down and eat a good solid grounding breakfast
- She ate toast and coffee on the run
- She had a real addiction to hard yellow cheese (she loved it on almost everything!)
I suggested to her the following simple advice:
- Sit down and eat freshly made porridge or muesli for breakfast
- Give up the coffee
- Give up the dairy products – especially hard yellow cheese
She turned a corner
She thought my advice was rubbish until she went out and spent $200 on a naturopath, who to her frustration told her exactly the same thing! She said “I will give up anything to get well except cheese” I said “Babe, I have some bad news…” She finally got her head around it and realised that she was more committed to getting healthy and avoiding colds than she was to eating cheese.
Well, what a difference! After she did this for a few days, her diarrhea, manic and skittery issues fell away; she became regular, she had more energy through the day (due to the longer lasting energy from the porridge) and she stopped catching colds, flu, bugs… When she avoids dairy produce she does not get sick. The periods where she has fallen back to the old habits and eaten cheese and dairy products, she has gotten sick again. The great news is now there are alternatives for almost any addiction, here in NZ, there is a stunning range of ZENZO non-dairy cheeses made by the Chalmers Family for those cheeseaholics who just gotta grab some every now and again for a treat!
Once you are aware of your food intolerances and weaknesses then you are in control of your health.
Then you can create the perfect diet to suit your own biochemical individuality.
