You may get sick before you get well – Part One

“A cleansing regime can bring on conditions which are conventionally called diseases such as colds, flu, boils and skin rash. Abstain from solids, drink plenty of fluids, rest and persevere. People quite often feel they are on the wrong regime. The healing process is not necessarily pleasant”
Viktoras Kulvinskas from Survival into the 21st Century.

When you first start eating well, you may get a ‘cold-like’ mucous discharge for three to four weeks or more. This is the body finally being allowed to clean itself out. The first MONTH could be tough. When you have extensive amounts of mucous in the body you get poor circulation and so the fats cells sit stagnant, meaning no weight-loss and no toxic unloading. Once you reduce your mucous intake (by eating a plant-based wholefood diet rich in raw green vegetables), then your metabolism starts to change. This is when fasting on fresh vegetable juices and water can really help the process. Make sure you are eating a rich and varied diet full of good nutritious foods as you go.

Necessity is the mother of invention

The funny thing about food is the more you consider excluding from your diet, the more new and exciting super-nutritious foods you discover to fill the holes. When I started on a food elimination diet I discovered amazing new foods like tofu, quinoa, tamari, home-made sprouts (100% fresher, richer and tastier than store bought ones), miso soup, amaranth, tamari-roasted pumpkin seeds, tahini, linseed, spirulina and many more. Food elimination diets force you to open your mind and try new foods. Then, even if you go back to your old foods occasionally, you still have a wider, healthier and more varied base-diet to choose from.

It may take a little time

After 12 months you will have a great idea of how foods affect you as you can try a large amount of any suspected food in one day. How your body reacts to this will tell you the truth. It will give you an instant indication if it is a food that serves you or weakens you. Add back to your diet one food at a time, every three to four days. Monitor how you feel each time you try another food. If, on the day you try the suspected food again, you instantly get any of the classic symptoms, or they hit you within 24-hours, then you should probably avoid that food for at least another three months and then try the test again. Once you have distinguished the offending foods and removed them from your diet, you are back on the road to health again.

I would recommend you allow yourself three to 12 months off an offending food. Once your energy is restored and the food choices you are making are serving you (not weakening you) then you are on your way to Food Freedom!
