“We should all stop drinking milk. It was designed for calves, not humans”
Dr. Frank Oski, former Director of the Department of Pediatric Services, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
I am not a fan of cow’s milk or dairy foods being a standard or main part of the diet. Dairy foods are certainly not necessary to get your daily calcium, protein and nutrition, and the healthiest longest-lived cultures, peoples and centenarians generally do not eat them (though some do have freshly produced local goat’s milk products as a small part of their diets). Dairy products, dairy produce, dairy foods – in whatever form you choose to eat them – are a dietary choice rather than a necessity if you want healthy disease-free longevity. As an occasional treat they are fine.
If you have answered yes to all of the above then you may be able to tolerate regular or even daily dairy produce. You may even flourish on them. However, consider reading the independent research and scientific data on dairy products as it is very different to what you may have been taught in school. If you do choose to eat dairy products then genuine fully fermented yoghurt is by far the best choice.
There is nothing magical about cow’s milk. For many people cow’s milk lactose remains unabsorbed in the gut, which upsets the gut flora and can cause diarrhea, bloating and a variety of stomach upsets affecting nutrient absorption. Many do not recognise the connection and needlessly suffer conditions such as cramping, intestinal gas and long-term digestive/bowel troubles. Left for long periods this can develop into serious inflammatory disease. Inflammation is at the root cause of most modern lifestyle diseases. I cover all the abundant and easy ways to get calcium into the body here. In the meantime, if you are addicted to milk then you are lucky given the incredible range of soy, almond, oat, nut, seed and dairy free alternatives there are available now!
