“I interviewed several diabetics in Europe. They described how their blood sugar was almost not affected by the consumption of ripe, organic fruit. On the other hand if they consumed un-ripe conventionally grown fruit they had to inject more insulin. The only explanation I can think of is that in ripe, organic fruit, the sugar comes with important co-factors that enable the body to absorb the sugars with less negative side effects”
Sergio Boutenko, self-cured ex-diabetic, November 2010.
There are a few so-called ‘health experts’ currently saying how fruits should not be eaten because they are so high in sugar. This is such a pile of doggie-doo it is hard to know where to start. The key thing to remember is not to confuse ‘natural whole fruit’ with ‘man-made added-sugar’.
Whole fruits are just amazing
Fruits are a gift from Mother Nature, a potent mix of anti-cancer, anti-heart disease, anti-diabetes plant nutrients and bone-strengthening, bowel-cleansing fibres. Fruits are one of the best foods available providing you eat them in their whole and natural forms. The challenge we have is not fruits when eaten this way, it is sugars (whether cane or other sweeteners) from other sources. Eating lots of fruits is fine as long as your diet is a good balanced one mostly rich in vegetables and obviously avoiding all forms of added-sugars such as soft drinks, commercial fruit juices, refined foods, cakes, lollies, sweets, pastries, white breads and processed animal foods. Ideally fruit is the only way you would eat sugar-rich food of any sort at all. Fruit is best eaten in-between meals or with leafy green blossom vegetables (spinach, silverbeet etc).
Cancer and heart disease rates
The lowest cancer rates exist where the fruit intake is highest – even in areas where there is high cancer rates. The USA has the highest cancer rates in the developed world. The lowest cancer rates in the USA are Utah Mormons and Loma Linda 7th Day Adventists. Both groups live around 15 years longer than the rest of America, with the lowest levels of cancers and heart disease. They eat the most fruits of any group in America. Japan has the lowest cancer rates in the developed world. Even in Japan, the lowest cancer and heart disease rates are in Nagano and Okinawa, where they eat the highest levels of fresh fruits and vegetables of any province in Japan. Wherever you look around the world, the lowest cancer rates exist where the fruit intake is highest. The highest cancer rates exist where the fruit intake is lowest.
Do not peel fruits unless they have skins that you just cannot digest or stomach (such as bananas or citrus). Even then, leave as much of the white pith on as this has many super-health benefits such as anti-cancer liminoids. I always eat fejoas and kiwifruit whole as the insoluble fibre in the skins is just so good for the bowels! You don’t even taste it is the fruit is fresh and ripe.
