“Fasting is the greatest remedy, the physician within. Instead of medication, fast for a day”
Philippus Paracelsus, Greek philosopher and one of the three fathers of Western medicine.
**PLEASE NOTE: For those who are brand new to fasting and are a little unsure, please read my ‘Fasting: WARNING‘ article before you try fasting.
Before we start to look at the wonders of fasting, I only advise fasting be done when appropriate. Before fasting, study it and ensure it is the right thing for you. Fasting is NOT recommended if you have any of the following conditions: underweight, undernourished, obese, very overweight, pregnant, lactating, blood sugar problems, hypoglycemia, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, if you are ‘overly hypochondriacally focused’, have an eating disorder, such as bulimia or anorexia, or if you suffer any other systemic disease, such as cancer, depression or a serious heart condition, or if you are under 20 years old. Please consult with your chosen health professional before fasting. This is a thorough and cautious list, but it does need to be pointed out that fasting while in expert hands is always best.
How to start
To be very clear, I am not recommending that you initially fast on water alone. The fasting I recommend is based on receiving a full, healthy, nutritional intake right throughout the fast. It is what I call Regular Intelligent Fasting®. Slowly and INTELLIGENTLY starting to fast, gently at first, and then more rigorously over time (once you are used to it), will for most people, help to completely transform their health (alongside other smart diet, lifestyle and environmental choices of course).
Regular Intelligent Fasting® (RIF®) is a game-changer
I have fasted this way many times over the last 30 years, and I have had the most incredible results, both body and mind, from these experiences. Before we begin, I’d like to make clear a few misconceptions you may have about fasting. The fasting I recommend is not: just drinking water, losing all your energy and sleeping all day, some kind of eating disorder to avoid food, some kind of ‘get-stick-thin-like-a-model’ programme, depriving yourself of the joys in life and becoming a ‘misery guts’, or starvation (starvation is very different and damages your metabolism).
The fasting I recommend is REGULAR and INTELLIGENT
You do it weekly or fortnightly or monthly and you look after yourself. You drink vegetable juice, you get enough sleep, you manage your stress levels, and you do not smoke or drink. When you are not fasting you eat a healthy, balanced, plant-based wholefood diet and make smart lifestyle changes.
Fasting is NOT a silver bullet
And in this modern age of searching for the instant fix; remember that fasting is one part of a healthy lifestyle; not a single magic bullet.
