“We have described the etiology of obesity-related diabetes. We have pinpointed the steps, the way the whole thing happens. The research on mice suggests that the processes are comparable in humans and these findings are important to not just understanding how diabetes begins, but how better to treat and prevent it”
Jerrold M. Olefsky, a distinguished professor of medicine at University of California, San Diego, June 2014.
A recent study as published in the journal Cell found:
- Mice fed a high-saturated fat diet developed obesity, chronic low-grade tissue inflammation and eventually, insulin resistance, leading to diabetes
- The researchers suggest that inhibiting either (reverting to a plant-based wholefood diet as mice have naturally), could blunt, or even reverse, the damaging cellular sequence leading to diabetes
