DRY JULY Irish study finds alcohol is sadly embedded right in the national identity

The “normalisation” of alcohol by the big booze companies has won the ballet in Ireland.  And the fallout on health and early death is catastrophic…

A 2014 state-wide Irish Department of Health alcohol survey has found:

  • “Alcohol abuse had created a huge burden of health and social harm in the Republic of Ireland”
  • “Alcohol has become embedded in Irish national identity”
  • “There were between 1.3m and 1.4m harmful drinkers in the Republic of Ireland”
  • “Over 68% of male drinkers age 18-24 binge-drunk on a monthly basis”

But to me, the saddest and most sobering news of all was that “almost two-thirds (63.9%) of men and half (51.4%) of women surveyed started drinking alcohol before they turned 18…”
