Heart disease wiped out by 80% with these small diet and lifestyle changes
It is the simple daily things that prevent heart disease – and cause it.
“To our knowledge, this is the first study to find a protective association between low-risk lifestyle factors and early signs of vascular disease, coronary heart disease and death, in a single longitudinal evaluation. Those who adopted all four healthy behaviors had an 80% lower death rate over that time period compared to participants with none of the healthy behaviors”
Dr Haitham Ahmed, M.D., M.P.H., lead author, Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, Johns Hopkins.
The Johns Hopkins researchers studied over 6,000 people, for 7 years, and found that just adopting 4 lifestyle behaviors protected against coronary heart disease and reduced the chance of death from all causes by 80%.
What were the 4 behaviours that lowered your chances of heart disease and early death by 80%?
- Not smoking
- Eating a healthy plant-based wholefood diet
- Getting to a healthy weight and maintaining it
- Regular exercise
Only 2% of participants initially followed all four key lifestyle aspects.
Heart disease is a preventable illness.
Study results analysed by Haitham Ahmed and researchers at the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, from the multi-center Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), a long term and ongoing prospective examination of the risk factors, prevalence and prevention of cardiovascular disease. The study was published on June 3, 2013 in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Data was followed on 6,200 men and women, age 44-84, from white, African-American, Hispanic and Chinese backgrounds for an average of 7.6 years. As reported by The Times of India on June 23, 2013.
