Diabetes dramatically increases early death rates for older women

Postmenopausal women with diabetes have 2-3 times higher risk of dying compared with those without diabetes.

Older women with diabetes had almost three times the risk of early death than those without diabetes.

Study by Ma Y, et al “All-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality rates in postmenopausal white, black, Hispanic, and Asian women with and without diabetes in the United States” as published in the American Journal of Epidemiology 2013; DOI: 10.1093/aje/kwt177.  This study looked at data from 158,833 participants in the ongoing Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), enrolled from 1993-1998 and historically compared in 2013.  This relationship remained strong regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, hypertension, hormone use and smoking.  The study was supported by the NIH, the National Cancer Institute, and CDC.  As reported by MedPage Today on September 18, 2013.
