Heart disease set to spike in India
India is set to witness a spike in deaths due to heart diseases, far exceeding that of China.
In 2004, just 14% of total deaths in India were due to heart diseases.
The World Health Organisation Global Burden of Diseases Study states that cardiovascular diseases (CVD) will be the largest cause of death and disability in India by 2020.
By 2030, it is expected that 23 million people will die from heart disease every year.
Sadly most of these heart attacks and deaths will be in the young as they embrace the typical American diet that is being exported all over the world.
By 2020, India will have more than 4.77 million deaths a year due to CVD and 2.58 million deaths due to coronary heart diseases (CHD), says radiologist Harsh Mahajan.
China - with the world’s largest population of 1.34 billion - will have 4.53 million deaths due to CVD and 1.37 million due to CHD by 2020.
