No surprises here as both diseases are food related and particularly related to high alcohol, sugar and meat diets.
What did this 17 year study on 9,000 men find?
- Men with gout had an approximately 30% higher risk for death from cardiovascular disease
- Middle-aged men with gout and elevated uric acid levels have an increased risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease
- This was true even after adjusting for traditional risk factors
- Gout is an independent risk factor for death from cardiovascular disease
Study on 17-years follow-up data of 9105 men, aged 41-63, who had an above-average risk for coronary heart disease. Of these men, 3998 had elevated uric acid levels and 655 had gout.
