Heart failure tied to fatal cancer tied to early death

Heart failure patients face even more bad news with an increased risk of cancer along with an increased risk of death.

  • Heart failure patients had a 57% higher risk of cancer after adjusting for all other factors
  • Cancer was associated with a 46% increased risk of death in heart failure patients

Study by Tal Hasin, MD, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minneapolis, et al “Patients with heart failure may have an increased risk of incident cancer” as presented at the American Heart Association meeting November 2012.  The case-control study from Olmsted County, Minneapolis compared 961 newly diagnosed heart failure patients with age- and sex-matched community controls without heart failure.  As reported by MedPage Today on November 10, 2012.
