Diet high in bicarbonate tied to lower diabetes risk

What foods leave the body richer in bicarbonate?  Fruits and vegetables. 

What foods leach bicarbonate from the body?  Animal proteins.

The Nurses’ Health Study yet again.

This substudy of the ongoing Nurses’ Health Study found that those with higher plasma bicarbonate levels had a decreased risk of developing type II diabetes.  Those with lower bicarbonate also had a higher BMI, more hypertension and more dyslipidemia. 

Ernest I. Mandel, MD, of Harvard Medical School in Boston, and colleagues said “The association between lower plasma bicarbonate and development of diabetes may be explained by metabolic acidosis promoting insulin resistance, and this association may be independent of systemic inflammation”.  The blood samples were taken in 1989-1990 and then they were reviewed 10 years later.
