Heart disease risk cut by 44% with a daily dose of olive oil
I am always raving about olive oil. We have extra-virgin olive oil on our freshly air popped popcorn and once you get used to the stronger flavour you cannot ever eat typical ‘NZ movie’ popcorn ever again! Olive oil is our choice for oils. Why? Just check the Mediterranean diet and the fact that they hold some of the world records in longevity, and they use exclusively olive oil for everything – cooking, frying and on vegetables. This latest study confirms it again.
Some of the world’s oldest people eat olive oil every day
Riudavets Moll from Spain ate a healthy fresh traditional Mediterranean diet and lived to 114. Greek women have the lowest early death rates in the world; just 38 deaths per 1,000 women before the age of 60. The oldest woman in the world in 2012 is 120-year-old Miriam Amash who is still living in Israel. She says the secrets to her extraordinary longevity are ingesting a great deal of olive oil, avoiding alcohol and eating lots of vegetables and herbs.
Study found olive oil – regardless of other factors – lowered heart disease risk
Study by Spanish researchers as published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2012. The scientists looked at 40,622 adults participating in the 20-year long European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition. The research shows those who ate just two tablespoons of olive oil daily had a 44% lower risk of heart disease. One tablespoon cuts your risk by around 28%.
The research also showed that heart death victims were among the lowest consumers of olive oil.
As reported by Mailonline on 15 June 2012.
